So yesterday was Skye's first birthday. I'm still kind of in disbelief that I have a one-year-old. For example, I get weekly e-mails from babycenter.com to update me on Skye's development. Normally the message is from "My Baby This Week." This morning my message was from "My Toddler This Week." Toddler!? But she's only a BABY! I don't know if I can handle the fact that she is growing up.
This morning she noticed mom's fridge magnet with a springer spaniel* on it. Skye pointed at it and said, "Dadow!" And mom responded "Shadow! That's right!" I couldn't believe it! While I'm so happy that Skye is learning and developing her mind, it just breaks my heart to see my little baby grow up. Last year at this time we were in the hospital, trying to learn how to nurse. We've come a long way!
So back to yesterday. Skye was a sweetie all day long. She was well-behaved while we ran around, getting the house ready for her party. I knew that she would need a nap before the party, so when I heard her playing quiet down, I peeked into the living room to see what she was doing. Most of the time quiet = trouble. This time she was just laying on the floor, staring up at the ceiling. So I laid down with her. She giggled, and we played a bit. I took her back to the bedroom so that we could rock a little bit. Skye just cuddled with me while I sang to her. Then she put her paci in my mouth and said, "Mama!" That was her gift to me. I love it when she says, "Mama!" She doesn't say it often. Most everything is "Dada."
Skye was an angel throughout her party. She allowed herself to be passed around, and she REALLY enjoyed her cake. I had to show her how to eat it because she just stared at it for a little while, trying to figure out what to do with the cupcake. She started to get cranky, but Skye did not want to leave her guests. So she sat on the back deck and hung out with the family for a few more hours, slap-happy as can be! She giggled at the balloons, at her Nanna, at dropping her paci. Everything was hilarious!
Thankfully we didn't have to fight to put her to bed. A little dinner and a nice bottle with a story, and that little girl was out for the count!
What a crazy day!
*Mom has two springers - Shadow and Splash. I could write a whole post about those dogs, but I'll spare you. Anyway, Shadow is black and white and Splash is liver and white, so there is an obvious difference between the two. The dog on the magnet was black and white. Actually, I'll blog about the dogs. Shadow is the best dog that ever walked the earth. He was the pick of my uncle's litter, but he was injured when the other puppies were being sold, and he was left. We ended up falling in love with him, and we took him home with us. Then Splash came along. The runt of the litter, my aunt has to breathe life into him. Undoubtedly she took a drag on her cigarette first because that dog is stupid! But we love him anyway. Skye loves the dogs. Splash will put up with anything that Skye does to him, but Shadow just runs because he knows that he can't trust himself to not snap at her when she pulls his fur for the twentieth time. They are very good dogs! And they both really enjoy Skye's mealtimes becuase she likes to feed them.
